The Sphingids: Deilephila askoldensis

With a wingspan in between five and six centimeter, Deilephila askoldensis looks very much like a more brown version of the small elephant hawkmoth (Deilephila porcellus). In captivity both species behave in a similar manner. Both have one to two flights depending on the local conditions (temperature and humidity). When kept warm the pupal stage between the spring and summer flight will be very short (only two weeks). Wild askoldensis can also have one or two flights in between mid May and late September. This species is not as wide spread as the related porcellus and elpenor. They are only found on Japan, in the (southern) Russian Far East and from China south to North and South Korea.
