Silkmoth of the week: Caio richardsoni

Richardsoni is a larger Caio species with a wingspan up to thirteen centimeter. In captivity however they often do not reach this size and especially the females can be significantly smaller. This Caio occurs primarily in Western Mexico from Sonora in the north southwards into northern Guatemala. It's a species from drier woodland that starts flying after the beginning of the rainy season, from late May/June to September. In captivity they rarely produce a second flight and pupae can be overwintered fairly dry and cool (around 10 to 15 °C). It takes a longer period of warmer weather and higher humidity to break dormancy.
