This is only a very temporary identification. I hope to find some time the next couple of weeks to look a little bit closer to this one. Unfortunately I only have males. Having one of the much larger females as well, would have made it easier. Even though these males - with their wingspan of only four and half centimeter - are fairly small, I believe it's one of the circa fourteen species out of the African Pallastica genus. Four of them are reported from South Africa: lateritia, lucifer, pallens and sericeofasciata. That narrows it down a lot, unless of course this is not a Pallastica at all. The next post on this blog will be the caterpillars, I just need to find some time to go through all the pictures I took.
