Amerila bubo part 2

That was a very short pupal stage. After only two weeks the first adult White Frother (Amerila bubo) already emerged. Even though I'm usually no fan of Arctiinae, I find this species not so bad. Maybe it is because I caught the parent female myself in the Dzalanyama Forest in Malawi. Or maybe it's because of the interesting defense of the moths, with glands behind the head that produce an awful smelling yellow substance when disturbed. This is a relatively large species (for a tigermoth) with a wingspan in between five and six centimeter. Besides Malawi, the White Frother is also known from Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Congo (RDC), Mozambique, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa.
