Silkmoth of the week: Rothschildia triloba

Although in many aspects similar to the closely related and better known Rothschildia orizaba, the differences are quite obvious when you have the moths alive in front of you. First of all, triloba is slightly larger, especially when you compare fresh stock. The wingspan is somewhere between twelve and fifteen centimeter. The females are not necessarily larger then the males, just a lot heavier build. Second difference is the ground color. Triloba goes much more towards orange, while orizaba has a darker more chestnut brown color. This species flies in Central America (from Nicaragua through Costa Rica to Panama). In captivity they brood more or less continuously (as long as you keep the cocoons warm and provide a somewhat higher ambient air humidity).
