Silkmoth of the week: Automeris cf zozine

Here they are, formerly known as Automeris number five and turning out to be Automeris zozine. Or at least the moths in this post and their matching caterpillars (see my post from August 28th)  are what we all used to call zozine. Nowadays, it's not that simple anymore. Zozine has become a group of species and the descriptions of what is what are far from clear. Could this be wenczeli? Maybe. I am going to stick to zozine, a species that occurs from Mexico south to Nicaragua. It's not the most attractive Automeris, a bit grayish with a pink hue (especially in the females). The wingspan is between six and a half and eight centimeter. Given the right circumstances (moderate to warm and fairly humid) zozine will produce at least two flights. Keep them cooler and somewhat drier and they hibernate through winter.
