Silkmoth of the week: Syssphinx hubbardi

With the wings open a fantastic combination of pink and grey, with the wings closed a dull grey moth, that's Hubbard's Small Silkmoth (Syssphinx hubbardi). This species occurs in the warmer parts of the USA (extreme eastern California, southern Nevada, Southern Arizona and West Texas) and southward into Mexico (Sonora). It's a medium sized moth, with a wingspan in between six and a half and almost eight centimeter. The females are slightly larger and darker then the males. Adults are on the wing from June to September (and even November when there is a second flight). The pupae overwinter and can be kept in the fridge are in a very cool (but frost free) room.
