The Sphingids: Marumba quercus

This is my favorite European hawk moth: Marumba quercus or the Oak Hawk Moth. It's a larger species with a wingspan between eight and ten centimeter, with occasionally some larger females up to twelve centimeter. It's a species from drier areas occurring from Morocco, Portugal and Spain throughout Southern and (parts of) Central Europe as far east as western Kazachstan. The Oak Hawk Moth is also present in the Middle East (Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran). The main flight is from May to June, with locally a possible (partial) second flight in August/September. In captivity the moths tend to respond fairly quick to rising temperatures and can emerge much earlier.
