Meet the lovely Ludia orinoptena, a small species of Saturniid, with a wingspan in between five and six centimeter. This is probably the most common and widespread of the sixteen species in the Ludia genus. They pretty much occur in most of Sub-Saharan Africa, from Gambia in the west to Kenya in the east and all the way south to South-Africa. They fly during the rainy season in one to two flights per year. In captivity their emergence can be somewhat irregular, as it is not always that easy to recreate the perfect conditions (warm and humid), especially not during winter months.
