Silkmoth of the week: Dirphia avialtoparanensis

Dirphia avialtoparanensis is one of the (probably) fifteen species that have been described within the Dirphia avia group. Thus, no surprise that they look somewhat similar to avia. They are more colorful though and fairly large. Females can reach a wingspan of around ten centimeter. The males remain smaller. The pupal stage took almost two months. Add two more months to go through the larval stages and more then two weeks before the eggs hatch and you know that there are - at best - only two flights annually. So far, this species has only been described from Paraguay.
