Silkmoth of the week: Rhodinia fugax

Rhodinia fugax is the best known member out of a small genus of only eleven species. They are found in Japan and China (in several different subspecies). The adults are fairly small compared to other Rhodinia species. The wingspan is somewhere between five and eight centimeter, with the females being significantly larger then the males. Size is not the only way to tell males and females apart. There is also a very obvious difference in color. The males are more orange brown, while the females are yellow. The moths appear late in the season, when the night temperature is already low. Most moths will emerge in October or November, depending on local conditions. The eggs overwinter.
