At last, there they are! Five months after pupating, the moths finally emerged. This is not unusual in captivity. Even though they have multiple flights in the wild (April, July/August, December), in captivity they can be a bid reluctant to hatch. Usually it requires a combination of a fairly high night temperature (around 20 degrees Celsius) and a higher ambient humidity. This combination is not always easy to obtain during summer months, the reason why my cocoons remained dormant until now. This is a medium sized Automeris with a wingspan somewhere between six and nine centimeter. The males are significantly smaller then the females. Automeris zugana occurs in Central and (the west part of) South America from Costa Rica and Panama to Peru.
