Silkmoth of the week: Actias dubernardi

The ever popular Actias dubernardi ... who hasn't bred these? A relatively easy to rear member of the Actias genus, occurring only in southern China at higher elevations. This is one of the smaller, more elegant Actias species, with a wingspan up to nine centimeter, although in captivity they often remain smaller (most often due to inbred - I haven't seen fresh stock in years). In captivity, the adults emerge more or less year round, depending very much on local conditions. The emergence is usually triggered by cooler and more humid weather. Spraying the cocoons does not seem to speed up the process, it's more the ambient air humidity that encourages them to hatch. In countries like Belgium this type of weather is more regular in Spring and Autumn, reason why most of the moths (not all!) over here appear in the cooler months.
